What is downstreaming?
Downstreaming is a low-pressure chemical injection method that draws cleaning solution into the intake side of a pressure washer pump, where it mixes with water before being pressurized and discharged.
A downstream injector is a valve device mounted on the intake line of a pressure washer pump. It uses the suction created by the pump to draw cleaning chemicals into the water stream at low pressure, before the water reaches the pump itself. The chemical and water mix inside the pump and exit together at full working pressure.
This method differs from injecting chemicals downstream of the pump (after pressurization). Because the chemical enters at the intake, it never goes through high-pressure nozzles or wand tips at full PSI, which protects both the cleaning solution and the equipment. Many local pressure washing contractors use downstreaming for soft-wash applications, like residential siding, roof cleaning, and vinyl surfaces where high pressure could cause damage.
The main advantage is simplicity: the injector requires minimal equipment beyond the standard pump setup. The chemical concentration is controlled by the injector valve opening, allowing operators to adjust strength without changing nozzles or pump settings.
